The name SUBARU was used for the prototype vehicle completed in February 1954 for the first time – named the “SUBARU 1500 (P-1)”. Mr. Kenji Kita, the first president of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., who had a strong aspiration to enter the passenger car business, gave the name. In July 1953, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. was established. Approximately two years later, in April 1, 1955, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. absorbed five companies (Fuji Kogyo, a scooter manufacturer; coachbuilders Fuji Jidosha; engine manufacturers Omiya Fuji Kogyo; chassis builders Utsunomiya Sharyo and the Tokyo Fuji Sangyo trading company) and started anew as the new Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.
“SUBARU” is a Japanese term representing an open star cluster in Taurus “Pleiades”. It is said that the term was originally pronounced as “Misumaru” to mean “uniting a cluster of six stars in the Taurus constellation” but that the pronunciation changed from “Misumaru” to “Sumaru” and then to “SUBARU” over the years. The name SUBARU contains the hope that the six companies are united in harmony and achieve great success.

At the heart of Subaru is the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system – providing very precise steering response in corners, and surefooted stability when traveling at high speeds or bad weather. Subaru EyeSight is an advanced driver assist technology system that includes lane keep assist, smart braking, and throttle control. It is designed to help prevent frontal crashes with injuries by up to 85%. The system uses dual color cameras mounted behind the windshield and facing forward on either side of the rearview mirror to monitor traffic conditions ahead and identify lane markings. EyeSight can see what a driver might not, and it adjusts or activates EyeSight functions as necessary. The system has the highest IIHS safety rating and is available on select Subaru models. The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0i-L ES Hybrid is equipped with a e-Boxer hybrid powertrain that includes a 2.0-liter H-4 direct-injection engine paired with a motor-generator unit mated to a small battery pack that’s typically mounted over the rear axle. The hybrid powertrain is paired with an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT). The motor-generator unit is powered by a small lithium-ion battery that is charged by regenerative braking and engine power. The battery pack is designed to provide additional power to the engine during acceleration and to power the vehicle’s accessories when the engine is off. The Crosstrek’s hybrid system is designed to provide improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, while still providing ample power and performance.
Few other SUVs drive with the level of confidence and responsiveness of the Forester, and the main reason for this lies beneath the surface—the SUBARU BOXER engine. Its horizontally opposed configuration places the pistons 180 degrees apart, for a lower, flatter profile than other engine types. This gives the engine, and therefore the overall vehicle, a lower center of gravity and a better sense of balance. Further, the pistons’ opposing movements inherently counteract each other, naturally helping to reduce vibration.

When X-MODE is activated, Hill Descent Control automatically helps to maintain a constant speed when the Outback is traveling downhill.
